Mysteries of the Bermuda Triangle: Myth or Reality?

Bermuda Triangle is regarded by many as one of the most mysterious places on Earth. Devil’s Triangle or Hurricane Alley is the other name of the Bermuda Triangle. The sense of mystery surrounding the triangle stems from some strange disappearances of aircraft and ships passing by the place. According to Vincent Gaddis in Argosy magazine, the Bermuda Triangle is a triangle-shaped area in the Atlantic Ocean spanning over 500,000 square miles with its vertices as Miami; San Juan, Puerto Rico; and Bermuda. Here, I will share why the mysteries of the Bermuda Triangle is and whether the myths about the Bermuda Triangle are real.

Ellen Austin Incident – 1881 Source: https://www.businessinsider.in/

The mysteries of the Bermuda Triangle dates back to 1881 when the ship Ellen Austin came across a Ghost Ship with no men on board in the foggy waters of the Sargasso Sea. The ship was full of cargo but was abandoned. The Captain of Ellen Austin ordered it’s crew to board the ship and investigate.

Everything was intact in the Ghost Ship except the crew, Captain’s logbook, and the ship’s nameplate. The crew that boarded the Ghost Ship was asked to guide the ship and Ellen Austin till New York. This incident preceded a chain of mysterious events in the Bermuda Triangle, which has made it one of the most mysterious places on Earth.

In 1944, Commander Rupert Gould (who was also a diligent researcher and British Naval Officer) wrote in his book The Stargazing Talks on Ellen Austin. The incidents narrated by Rupert Gould are similar to the ones mentioned above. The Ellen Austin incident is a mystery to date as Rupert Gould’s book’s source was never found. This incident has raised the eyebrows of mystery lovers and conspiracy theorists to float various myths about the Bermuda Triangle.

Spray – The vessel which Joshua Slocum used

The mysteries of the Bermuda Triangle did not die out after that. In 1895, famous sailor Joshua Slocum mysteriously disappeared in his voyage from Martha’s Vineyard to South America. In the year 1918, the USS Cyclops mysteriously vanished with 309 of it’s crew members without a trace during their journey from the Caribbean to Baltimore.

The Cyclops was known to be fully equipped with early warning systems, yet nobody got a single hint before the ship disappeared. A series of such disappearances occurred like that of USS Proteus and USS Nereus in 1941. All these already started to make people believe that the Bermuda Triangle is becoming a flashpoint for all such disappearances. As a result, it is looked upon as one of the most mysterious places on Earth.

In 1945, a group of at least five TBM Avenger torpedo bombers of the US Navy, along with 14 of its crew, disappeared strangely while flying over the triangle to perform some routine exercises. The five aircraft are together called Flight-19 and were headed by Lieutenant Charles Carroll Taylor. The Captain was heard saying during the final moments:

“We are entering white water, nothing seems right. We don’t know where we are, the water is green, no white.”

This incident has completely put a stamp on the Bermuda Triangle as one of the most mysterious places on Earth. The crew and even the debris were never found. There were a series of few other disappearances after that, which has given rise to the Bermuda Triangle legend.

From the time of this incident until the middle of the 1980s, at least 25 planes disappeared while flying over the Bermuda Triangle. These are some of the mysteries of the Bermuda Triangle. Many people believe that it is the work of Extraterrestrial or Paranormal beings.

One of the Most Mysterious Places on Earth – More Mysteries of the Bermuda Triangle

The mysteries of the Bermuda Triangle continued even after with various other incidents:

  • The disappearance of “Star Ariel,” a G-Agre Plane in 1949,
  • The disappearance of a large tanker ship SS Marine Sulphur in 1963,
  • Sylvia L. Ossa’s disappearance in 1967,
  • The disappearance of pilot Irving Rivers in 1978, and the disappearance of a Cessna plane in 1984.

These mysteries of the Bermuda Triangle have put a question mark in people’s minds about whether it is safe to travel near or over the Bermuda Triangle. People regard it as one of the mysterious places on Earth.

Mysteries of the Bermuda Triangle: Fiction or Facts

Is the Bermuda Triangle one of the most mysterious places on Earth? Or, the stories are half-truths. Well, disappearances are strange, but scientists mostly believe that rough and stormy weather in the Atlantic and the Bermuda Triangle, eruptions of Methane Gas on the seafloor, and mistakes on the pilots’ part and mariners or technical glitches have caused such mishaps. According to them, these events are just myths about the Bermuda Triangle.

Incase of Flight-19, Charles Taylor did have a history of getting lost while on a sortie. It may have happened that on that fateful day, he again lost the route and led his team far away from the desired destination. The US Government has also refused to treat this area as a dangerous place to travel and has debunked most of the place’s myths. The discovery of SS Cotopaxi in January 2020 also has debunked mystery theories.

The mystery surrounding the G-Agre Plane which was lost in 1949 was also given a logical conclusion as per reports of BBC. The plane was lost due to technical snag. So, however Bermuda Triangle is among the most mysterious places on Earth, but the mystery theories are not backed by solid proofs. Going by some of these reports the mysteries of the Bermuda Triangle seems to be still an art of fiction as per scientists.

According to scientific researchers, mysteries are mysteries until known. There is an end number of a natural phenomenon on Earth, and the Universe is unknown, so this is quite normal. No evidence is found till date to prove that the mysteries of the Bermuda Triangle are real. Still, many regard it as one of the most mysterious places on Earth.

Even today, a large number of planes and ships pass by the Bermuda Triangle without disappearing. One can track flights in the area live online even now. Nevertheless, the strange earlier disappearances have always pushed people to believe the place amongst one of the most mysterious places on Earth.

Bermuda Triangle – Is it really one of the most mysterious places on Earth?

Well, my opinion is simple! It is just other places with its secrets, and there lies it’s beauty. We must treat it that way. The disappearances are baffling, but one has to acknowledge that the navigation system both on sea and air was not great in those days. Often the compasses and other navigation devices did not work during extreme weather. The search operation techniques were also not that developed as now in the early 1990s. And, it is hard to believe any theories unless there is proof about the same. Though I too rate Bermuda Triangle as one of the most mysterious places on Earth, but can not term the mysteries as facts!
