What are the negative effects of social media on students’ academic performance?

negative effects of social media on students' academic performance

I do not see any negative effects of social media on students’ academic performance. Social media is beneficial not only for students but for everyone. But there can be few drawbacks as well:

1) I will like to state that if you are exploring social media forums – Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter, YouTube, etc. for education purposes, students may tend to get diverted to other content and activities (irrelevant and to some extent vulgar content).

2) If you can avoid such temptations, then obviously negative effects of social media on students’ academic performance can be avoided.  So, you can see that besides all the positive effects of social media on college students & school students, there are certain negatives. But again, it all depends on how you use social media.

4) Also, at times, there can be a tendency among youngsters to befriend fellow students on social media. One must be careful because social media is all virtual, and you do not know the person personally. So, it will be better to make fewer friends (Well, not against friendship, though, what’s important is a caution!) and focus more on your educational purposes.

5) Sometimes, marketers from EdTech firms, Online Education Firms, Colleges, etc., may tempt you to subscribe to or buy certain courses or avail of services; please get facts verified before availing of any such services. Also, please, do not fall into the trap of certain agents or middle-men who may tempt you to get a particular job or get admission to your dream college against a substantial fee. Do not fall into such traps!
